What is FSSAI Registration?
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a legal authority that offers a food license to all food business operators (FBO) in India. FSSAI Registration ensures the security of food products and it is essentially a food safety certificate circulated by the food authority in India.
What is the need for FSSAI Registration?
FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
Who all need a FSSAI License?
All the traders, manufacturers, restaurants who are involved in the food business must obtain a 14-digit license number which is printed on their food products. It is mandatory to acquire FSSAI registration for traders or all food business operators who are involved in the food business. Eligible Food Business Operators like manufacturers, storage, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors, etc. need to take a License from the State Authority.
FSSAI license vs FSSAI registration
Any person or entity that does not classify as a petty food business operator is required to obtain an FSSAI license for operating a food business in India.
Under FSSAI, there are two kinds of FSSAI license, namely, the Central FSSAI license and State FSSAI license. In addition to the FSSAI License, there is also an FSSAI registration which is applicable for petty food retailers.
There are three Categories of FSSAI/ Food License, depending upon the turnover of the Food Business Operator.
FSSAI Basic License.
FSSAI State License.
FSSAI Central License.
FSSAI Basic License
FSSAI Basic Registration has to be obtained by small FBOs having a turnover up to Rs. 12 Lakhs. The FBOs having a turnover exceeding Rs. Twelve lakhs need to obtain FSSAI License.
FSSAI State License
A state license is awarded to those that have a turnover of Rs. 12 lakhs to 20 crores and operate within a particular state only.
FSSAI Central License
A central license is given to those businesses that have an annual turnover of more than 20 crores and for those that operate in multiple states.
FSSAI Registration Fee
Fees for basic FSSAI License is fixed at INR 100 for one year.
The FSSAI State License fees ranges from INR 2000/- to 5000/- a year.
Fees for FSSAI Central license is fixed at INR 7500/- per year.
Is FSSAI license Mandatory?
Obtaining an FSSAI license is mandatory before starting any food business operation in India. As per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) rules, it is mandatory for food-related businesses, however small, to apply for a license or registration.
Who are exempted from obtaining FSSAI License/ Registration?
Hawkers and people related to the cottage industry are exempted to obtain FSSAI license and registration.
Other exempted people or entity include itinerant vendors, petty retailers, and temporary stallholders.
Does one need FSSAI License for selling Homemade Food?
Yes, you need a food license from FSSAI to sell homemade food but if it is a small scale, only registration is required. Homemade food or Hotel food each and every Food Business Operator (FBO) is required to either register or get a Food License.
Does one need FSSAI License for selling food on Online food websites like Swiggy and Zomato?
You need an FSSAI License to run an Aggregator Food Delivery apps like Swiggy, Zomato, Uber eats, Foodpanda, etc as they are e-commerce entities giving listing, directory of FBO, food products and also facilitating orders or transaction on their website. FSSAI License is mandatory for all the restaurants.
